My name is Steve Smith and I have had more than 40 years’ experience in training dogs, not only working gundogs but also sheepdogs when I first started out.

My passion for gundogs started over 25 years ago when I was given a Sprocker pup by a farming friend. I began training her at a local gundog club in Worcestershire. After four years I became chairman of the club, a position which I held for eight years. During that time, I had the opportunity to organise field trials and working tests for both Spaniels and Retrievers and I have also competed in both events successfully with a selection of my own gundogs.

I left the forestry industry due to an ongoing injury and took on the role of headkeeper on a large commercial shoot, where I hosted both Cocker and Springer Championships. I stayed in this job for a total of seven years, during which time I started training other gundogs and their handlers. With the support and encouragement of private clients, I set up Wrencourt Gundogs, gave up gamekeeping and turned to full time gundog training. This was in 2017 and I have not looked back since.

In 2018 I was asked to become Gundog Chairman for The Game Fair and have had the pleasure of organising not only the prestigious Home International, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019, but also the Euro Challenge competition, another long-established event at The Game Fair. 2021 will see a new competition being introduced, The Game Fair Working Gundog Test Championship.
